This has been one of the most interesting free-agent off seasons that I can remember in the NBA and it’s not even 2010, the year King James hits the market! The list is a big one but the big names have already started flying and I wanted to focus on some teams and what they have done so far and see what could happen next. With so much time to go in the off season we can consider these mid-term grades.
Detroit Pistons-The Pistons started shaving old players and getting younger talented players. The broke the bank when the signed Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva but it was one of the quietest and best moves of the free agent season so far. Grade:A
Boston Celtics-Rasheed Wallace will be a good ad on for this team and I liked the way they approached bringing him to Boston, as a team. He turned down interviews with Orlando and San Antonio. Grade: B+
Los Angeles Lakers- Is it possible that the champs just got better? The signing of Ron Artest will help them out and add to an aggressive style that were lacking at points during the season. That is if they can keep control of Artest. Grade: B+
Cleveland Cavaliers-grabbing Shaq is a big deal but they still have some holes to fill and Lebron is still hungry. He is now making phone calls on his
own and if he can sway Trevor Ariza away from the Rockets this grade is an A. Grade: B+
San Antonio Spurs- I like the move to get Richard Jefferson and he played excellent in most spots last year and proved he is durable. This only helps an injury riddled team stay intact and get an extra scorer. Next up is McDyess for the Spurs. Grade: B
Dallas Mavericks-you have to hand it to Mark Cuban, he is being aggressive this off season and got Kidd and is looking to add Marion to the mix. He got a verbal agreement from highly coveted Marcin Gortat and is looking to do more. The problem is most of the players are in their 30’s and Dirk will be a free agent next year. Grade: B
Orlando Magic- they made a nice move in grabbing Vince Carter but his age may factor into this off season. I like the move but losing Hedo Turkoglu was a pr nightmare, until he went to Toronto. Grade: C
Houston Rockets: time to rebuild. Yao is out for awhile, Artest is gone and it looks like Ariza will be backing out of his promise. It is time for T-Mac to go. Grade: F
Miami Heat-I put the Heat in here because Dwayne Wade came out and said that if the Heat don’t show that they want to compete he is leaving. Now the heat have to do something and I am not sure Allen Iverson will do the trick. Grade: N/A
Toronto Raptors-They got Hedo but the real story is what they do next with Marion and Bosh that will make the difference in a grade of an F or an A! Grade: N/A

Have to ask one question…..the title of this “analysis” is FREE AGENTS in 2009. So why the lack of a grade for Toronto? Because of Bosh? You graded Cleveland??? Bosh and the king are both 2010 agents. Just asking…
No problem I love questions and think this is a good one. The article is about free agents and how teams have done so far in the market. While Toronto was aggressive in getting Hedo from Portland, they are far from done with rumors of Shawn Marion being shipped. If I were to grade them now it would be lower than what it would be at the end of the free agent season. I was giving the club more time to see how things worked out for them and see what other moves they made. Thanks for the comment it was good stuff!
